Pluto

Pluto is the slowest moving planet, if you even get to call it a planet anymore. With a name that was taken from the Roman God of the Underworld, it rules those things that are unseen, buried or kept secret. Like the mythical Phoenix, who crashes, burns and rises again, Pluto also offers the transformation or rebirth of what we’ve lost. Along with buried secrets and intense transformation, Pluto rules hidden power, depth psychology, black markets, organized crime and all matters associated with the Underworld. Pluto brings intensity and often causes power struggles as the demand for transformation is resisted by those who are comfortable with the old ways. Sadly this can mean the people in power are fighting to keep it and the masses have to fight to expose the skeletons in the closets kept secret by those in power. Whatever stage of transformation, secrets hold center stage when Pluto rules. Secrets buried, exposed and transformed affect everyone regardless of who knows about them and of how unseen they are. While Pluto is a transpersonal planet that might be more involved with the government and world leaders, our own relationships may also experience drama as we are called to transform into better versions of ourselves. The better self will be a great celebration when we get done with the crash and burn that comes before we rise back up renewed. Those underground influences and hidden powers affect us regardless .

Just like the stories of the other discovered planets, we can learn about the energy of this heavenly body by how it was found. Pluto was first seen by Clyde Tombaugh in February of 1930. Its existence wasn’t announced until March 13th of that year. Why March 13th? For personal reasons! That’s the psychology of Pluto. March 13th was the 149th anniversary of the first observation of Uranus and the 75th anniversary of the birth of Percival Lowell, the man whose calculations convinced Tombaugh to search for the planet even after Lowell’s death. The importance of personally significant choices and the power to impact the world, even after death, have been a part of Plutonian energy from humanity’s first awareness of the planet. Notably, psychology and the idea of the unconscious were being popularized by Freud in the 1930’s as Pluto became known. As a result, among the things that Pluto rules is psychology and the impact of our unconscious on our personal lives.

Pluto is the slowest moving planet, taking 248 years to complete its orbit and is usually the farthest from the Sun. Yes, we can only say usually. From 1979 to 1999, Pluto was the 8th planet and closer to the Sun than Neptune. On average, Pluto takes just over 20 years to go through a sign or that’s what the answer should be since it takes a little over 240 years to make it through all 12 signs. Yes, you guessed it, there’s a lot more to that story. The time Pluto takes in a sign ranges from 11 and 1/2 years to almost 30. Pluto entered Leo 5 times between 1937 & 1939 and it made it half way around the zodiac to enter Aquarius 5 times in 2023 & 2024. Pluto will once again enter Leo 5 times between 2183 and 2185. It seems unfair, although I’m not sure for which side, that Pluto makes it halfway around the zodiac from Leo to Aquarius in 86 years but takes162 years to travel the second half of the circle.

Like we did in 2023, we have Pluto moving between traditional Capricorn and innovative Aquarius for the coming year. As the leader of the Earth signs, Capricorn turns the transformative power of Pluto on our financial foundations causing us to re-evaluate banking, housing and practical needs for stability. As the persistent Air sign, Aquarius directs the re-evaluation brought by Pluto into areas of technology, innovation and idealistic communication. We’ll be dealing with more AI issues during Aquarius and may need to clean up issues around financial planning during our final months of Capricorn. Whenever Pluto makes a change, we feel the impact more strongly which makes last year and 2024, years of big impact from Pluto.
